If that person is not VIP and we know something about them from our systems, then we’ll send a chatbot to reply and then ask, “Is this useful for you? If not, write your question again and we will send it to a human.” 70% of the time, you saved the company a bunch of time and money by automating that flow, and 30% of the time, sending them to a human is still valuable for a company. Palo Alto company OwnerListens has bridged the gaps in chatbot marketing strategy by linking them with already existing messaging platforms, helping businesses and customers instant message with each other safely and at scale. 12,000 businesses (like the San Francisco 49ers and Philz Coffee) use OwnerListens already, and more are on the way.
To be clear, messaging is great for personalization and getting real time valuable data, and it’s great that customers can create a relationship with the brand, but it’s also challenging. We can send them to an employee’s phone, but personal phones give you all the BYOD issues and policies that arise from that like, can your frontline employee even have their phone with them? It’s complicated, but also a huge opportunity as you’re already paying employees who are in your store and not paying another customer service center for another contact. There is great value there and it results in a better customer experience. The reality is that most companies don’t have enough messaging data yet to build great chatbots with their customers. Messaging is a different vibe than a live chat or an email, and this is something to train your employees for and think about when you create policies and templates for responding to customers.
Multiple channels means dealing with multiple APIs which can get complicated quickly. D’Angelo also said that no coding skills are needed to create a chatbot with Poe and that the company is working on an API that would allow more advanced bot development and hosting. The API would essentially allow users to host a bot from a server they operate. Developers who are interested in joining the beta testing can reach out to The user-generated prompt and the base LLM are then used to generate a new chatbot that can be customized and shared with others. Poe claims this method can produce a wide variety of chatbots for different purposes and personalities.
Do you want to be 100% sure or 70% sure that this is the right answer? If your brand is extremely important to you — as it should be — then you want to shoot for 100% and not be fine with 70%. Point of contact can make or break a company, so setting up easy, quick engagement strategies is paramount. But still, many large companies are using email or telephone as their main contact strategy, even though messaging has been proven to be much preferable for billions of people. Those companies in the know have started to use chatbots to field the FAQs and cut down call center times, but chatbots can be limited in their use cases and complicated to set up. We have companies that have a threshold for VIPs that is 100%, therefore we always send those customers to a human.
Tip number three on bots is they generally aren’t good enough yet for a variety of reasons, so companies need to be careful and cautious about deploying them, lest they embarrass and hurt the brand. The ones that are good are for very specific use cases. For example, some scheduling bots are pretty good at scheduling and some structured bots are good for things like buying from a limited menu of options. However, once people reach out to you through a channel, then they start thinking they can reach out about other stuff through that same channel.
Tip number two on bots is to carefully select your channels. There are many messaging platforms out there, so which are relevant for you? If you’re in the US, maybe SMS texting and Facebook Messenger are enough, but if you’re in China as well, you also need WeChat and in Korea, you need Line. At a basic level, start with SMS texting and the top messaging app used by your target audience and go from there.
Email answers are not the same as chat answers are not the same as text messaging answers. The main reason is, email is very much time-delayed. There are different expectations; a subject line, a “Dear so-and-so,” a long signature, et cetera. Customers are anxiously sitting there waiting for a quick reply or they just ditch the chat window. Communicating with customers is at the top of many a business’ list of things to do right.
We all look forward to never having to be on hold or wait for help from a business but it will take time. The future is bright for messaging, chatbots, and for the humans who use them. That brings us to the seventh tip, which is because of this data gap we suggest building bot assistants. These are bots that are looking at data that you already have and data we are collecting, and helping the agent with a suggestion as to what to reply. It’s a suggestion bot; it does not automatically shoot an answer to your customer, but shows it to an agent who can say yes or no, or the agent can edit it to make it better and the system can learn from that. These “helpers” have existed for decades but with more powerful AI they can be much more accurate and useful.
Both Poe and Character.AI are tapping into a growing demand for personalized and immersive chatbot experiences that can entertain, educate and connect users with their favorite characters and brands. According to a report by Grand View Research, the global conversational AI market is expected to reach $13.9 billion by 2028. The feature was quietly rolled out this past Friday to all Poe users, allowing anyone to write a short text prompt and choose an existing LLM as a base for their new creation. The base can be either Claude Instant or ChatGPT, both of which are leading general-purpose conversational agents. Poe, a platform for creating and interacting with chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs), has launched a new feature that lets anyone create their own chatbot with just a few words. What’s great about messaging is that once the industry comes into its own, the tools are in place, and companies as well as consumers have adapted, there is a win-win outcome waiting for us at the end.
The update puts Poe directly in competition with Character.AI, another artificial intelligence startup that has attracted attention and funding for its ability to generate chatbots that can mimic different personalities, from celebrities to fictional characters. This update to Poe is just the latest in a flurry of news about personalized AI chatbots in the past few weeks. Last month, announcements from many of the biggest names in the industry — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google — made waves with major product launches.
